Overview of KS3 Curriculum

Year 8 ‘Music Project’

In Year 8 our students are given the unique opportunity to opt into our one-year String or Woodwind Project. These projects run during Music class, during which the students are given the opportunity to learn to play either the violin, flute or clarinet for the duration of Year 8, free of cost.

KS3 At KS3 level our students access the NI Curriculum for Music through a wide range of practical music-making activities. Students are introduced to the three key components of music making; Performing, Composing and Listening & Appraising. Throughout the three years of study students study the following topics:

Year 8: School Song and Finding Your Voice, Introduction to Ukulele, Introduction to Keyboard Skills, The Musical Elements, African Drumming and The Instruments of the Orchestra.

Year 9: Blues Music, Musical Theatre, Ukulele, Form and Structure, Hooks and Riffs.

Year 10: Film Music, GarageBand Project, Popular Music, Musical Traditions of Ireland.

Overview of KS4 Curriculum

KS4: In St. Louise’s we offer two strands of study at KS4 level.

GCSE Music

The CCEA GCSE Music Specification is delivered for students partaking in weekly music lessons on either an instrument or voice. Our students develop their skills in performing as a soloist and as part of an ensemble, in composing as they write and submit two pieces of music and through listening and appraising. We study a range music across Western Classical, Popular, Film and Irish Traditional genres. http://ccea.org.uk/music/

OCN ‘Digital Music’ – Level 2 Certificate in Creative Arts and Digital Technologies

We offer the OCN in Digital Music Level 2 Certificate. This course enables students to develop their skills as a DJ. Students work on a portfolio of research tasks, dance music composing tasks as well as partaking in weekly DJing lessons with an industry professional.

Overview of Post 16 Curriculum

A Level Music:

At KS5 we offer deliver the CCEA GCE A Level Music Specification. This is a two-year course of study consisting of AS and A2. Pupils study Orchestral and Vocal Music from the Renaissance through to the 20th Century periods of Music. Students will also continue to develop their performing and composing skills through the relevant components of the course. http://ccea.org.uk/music/

Extra-Curricular Music:

The Music Department offers a variety of extra-curricular groups that allow for students to develop their musicianship and ensemble performance skills as well as representing St. Louise’s regularly in the community. All students receiving music tuition in school are encouraged to participate in at least one ensemble.
