Department Motto

A dynamic Modern Language Department aims to nurture our students holistically and develop their curiosity for learning, language, and other cultures. We will equip pupils with the transferrable skills needed to contribute to and be a valued member of a global community.

Overview of KS3 Curriculum

At KS3 we offer 3 Languages: French, Irish, and Spanish. Over 3 years, students have the opportunity to  build their language learning through a variety of topics, enabling them to acquire the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We strive to foster a pupil’s interest in and an appreciation of other cultures and language.

French/Spanish:

YR8: introducing myself and provide personal information, talk about school subjects and describe my uniform, describe where I live and my house.

YR9: describe family and pets, talk about daily routine, the school day and afterschool activities. Talk about food and drink, buy food at the market, order in a restaurant and café.

YR10: understand weather, describe my town, and understand directions, describe my holidays, and ask for help at the chemist or doctors.

Irish

YR8: introducing myself and personal information, describing my family and pets, describing where I live, telling the time.

YR9: describing myself and others, hobbies, and activities at the weekend, talk about daily routine and chores helping at home.

YR10: understand weather, describe my town, and understand directions, describe my holidays, and ask for help at the chemist or hospital.

Overview of KS4 Curriculum

At KS4 we offer CCEA GCSE for French, Irish or Spanish. Each specification builds on knowledge from the KS3 curriculum and continues to develop the student’s enthusiasm for language while increasing their confidence in the four skill areas listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The students will study 3 contexts which include topics such as family and relationships, free time, local area and wider environment, travel and tourism, school life and future jobs.

The students will have the opportunity to work with a language assistant to perfect their spoken language.

Overview of Post 16 Curriculum

At KS5 we offer CCEA GCE for Irish, French, or Spanish. Students will deepen their knowledge of language within topics such as relationships, culture and lifestyle, young people in society and our changing world. This course affords them the opportunity to grow cultural awareness by studying literary texts and film.

The students will have the opportunity to work with a language assistant to perfect their spoken language.
