The Geography Department strive for a critical and ethical approach to the world and our place within it. We aim to instil a sense of awe and wonder by providing a dynamic and diverse curriculum for a dynamic and diverse world
The KS3 Geography curriculum is a three year course which inspires in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world. It equips students with knowledge and skills about diverse places, resources and the natural and human environments together with a good understanding of physical and human processes and how people interact with them. The Years 8-10 Geography curriculum allows the students to be ‘GCSE Geography’ ready at the end of their Key Stage 3 journey. The Ecoclub is run as an extra-curricular activity by the Geography Department.
CCEA GCSE Geography curriculum allows our students to develop their knowledge and understanding of geographical concepts and appreciate how these concepts affect our changing world. It allows them to develop as effective and independent learners and as critical thinkers with enquiring minds. They understand their responsibilities as global citizens and recognise how they can contribute to a future that is sustainable and inclusive. They also have opportunities to develop and apply their learning to the real world through fieldwork outside the classroom. In Year 11 there is the opportunity for students to participate in the GA WorldWise Quiz which takes place in QUB in the Autumn term.
At AS and A2 level pupils follow the CCEA specification. In Year 13 (AS) the compulsory physical and human modules are studied and pupils undertake a fieldwork investigation at Magilligan Fieldwork Centre. In Year 14 (A2), the Geography Department offers optional modules in Physical Geography covering Plate Tectonics and Tropical Ecosystems and in Human Geography covering Cultural Geography and Tourism. At AS and A2 the Department places emphasis on the acquisition of skills including fieldwork and decision-making and pupils attend the Geographical Association Autumn lecture programme at Queen’s University which supports the specification and allows pupils to widen their knowledge and skills base. This year as part of the Department’s extra curricular activities, the A2 Geography students participated in the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee Youth Engagement Programme.
