This double award pathway incorporates academic and vocational study. Students can opt for single or double award A’ Level study in Dance or choose either AS/A’ level or BTEC National Award study alone

AS/ A' Level Dance
Assessment Components: Choreography and Performance with extended study involving Appreciation of Contemporary Dance.
Entry Requirements: 5 GCSEs Grades A*-C or equivalent.
It is not a requirement for students to have studied dance at KS 4 however, a great interest and love of dance with a commitment to train hard and work with others is an essential prerequisite of this course of study.
AS to A’ Level Dance is a two year course comprised of four units of study.
AS Year 1
· Unit 1: Understanding dance (40%): Written examination: Principles and practice of performance and choreography in relation to professional works and ones own
· Unit 2: Choreography and Performance (60%): Practical coursework internally assessed which comprises two sections; (a) Solo choreography/ performanceand (b) Performance in a duo/trio.
A' Level Dance Year 2
Unit 3: Dance Appreciation 50%: Content and Context: written examination which assesses: (a) Knowledge of one area of study chosen from genres of Contemporary, Jazz or Ballet and (b) critical appreciation and analysis of one Set Work selected from one of three set by the Board.
Unit 4: Group Choreography and Solo Performance 50%: Experience of choreography and performance through practice is central to this unit and is an extension of learning and skills developed in AS study.
Students learning will feature training in contemporary dance with a focus upon improvisational practices. Choreographic work will feature as a range of stylistic challenges and students will be encouraged to showcase with others as opportunities arise. Theoretical knowledge will extend learning from studio practices. All advanced students will be expected to attend live dance performances throughout their two years of study.
BTEC National Award in Dance
Course Description
This two year course is designed to develop dance skills at a vocational level. It offers practical study for those wishing to follow a career in Dance, Theatre and Musical Theatre or wider studies in community arts. Entry requirement to this course is four GCSE’s A*-C or equivalent
· Study comprises of practical workshops in a minimum of two styles, choreographic practices and performance projects with other dancers and also with artists in residence.
· Students will create a portfolio of evidence of dance technique, choreography and performance in written and multimedia presentation.
· Learning Styles are student centred and there is opportunity for students to extend their coursework into wider extra curricular practices and other dance agencies.
· Students will showcase their work in an external theatre venue. Possibly working with a Dance artist for the Final Major Project

BTEC Award In Dance comprises two compulsory core units:
· Performing to an audience
· Dance Appreciation
Plus 3 Specialist Units
· Developing contemporary dance technique
· Applying contemporary dance technique
· Developing choreographic principles
Dance Leadership Award

Students beginning their Advanced Dance studies in 2008 will have the opportunity to train as a Dance leader and also study for the Presidents Award. Those interested in this opportunity should see Mrs Mannion when applying for either or both courses of Dance study
